I don't think I'd franchise him either. Miami's best bet is to let him test the waters, and if they truly want him they'll have the opportunity to match if Smith wants to return. I do however feel a early draft pick can be better used elsewhere. I'd lean towards bringing him back, even with his inconsistencies. What I would not do is sign him to a long term deal, unless it is incentive laden.

"It's a steep price for a player who struggled against smaller, quicker receivers while allowing more combined first downs and touchdowns than any cornerback in the NFL last season." Ummmmm franchise him why?

I'd take Smith back...for significantly less than what he wants. And since it seems he is determined to get $8-10 mil a year, I see him moving on and Miami looking at CBs in free agency and early in the draft.

I think Smith is about two steps above sucking. I don't want him back at any price.

Normally I would agree but we need depth and if for no other reason I would bring him back for that if the price is right.

I would only give Smith about $4 million for five years. He doesn't produce as must as Brandon Carr to get his money.

First: Smith worked his ass off this past year with it being a contract year. While I appreciate the effort, how exactly he is special?

I think you could replace Smith's production/impact for significantly less than what he is looking for. He's vulnerable to speedy receivers and doesn't get INTs. After 4 years, I think it's safe to say he is what he is.

I think he can be a very good complementary CB - covering the #2 WR on a team. But he is looking for #1 money.

Do you pay him #1 money and draft a #1 CB? I suppose you could do that. But again, I think Miami can pay another CB half what Smith is looking for and get similar results on the field.
