I agree that Honey Badger and WR Da'Rick Rogers (kicked out of Tennessee) have been complete idiots their entire careers, and the odds of them staying squeaky clean into their 30's is unlikely.
But I'll also pose the counter argument: CB Janoris Jenkins and WR Mike Williams (Bucs).
Jenkins was a projected Top-10 before the 2012 season, but was kicked out of Florida for getting busted with pot twice in 3 weeks. He went to D2 North Alabama, and admitted in pre-draft interviews that he smoked pot at North Alabama.
Mike Williams QUIT Syracuse half-way through the 2009 season. QUIT.
Jenkins was drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Williams went in the 4th Round of the 2010 Draft. The Rams and Bucs are really getting an ROI for these two.
Would I take either Mathieu or Rogers with our #82 pick? I would. Jenkins and Williams were bigger trainwrecks.
Good point. At the end of the day, it's up to a team's GM and his staff to do their due diligence on these players and make a projection based on what they learn. You have to weigh the risk-reward ratio, and decide from there. Each case is different - don't think you can just make a blanket statement. There's a huge difference between a guy that smoked pot once at a party, and one that does the old 'wake and bake' every morning. It's up to the team to find out how bad the problem is, and act accordingly.
